Gym Shortz | A Variety of Physical Activities and Topics Presented in Short Segments
This workshop can be customized by choosing segments from the topics below:
- Advocacy – Describes the importance of, and methods for, advocating for Health and Physical Education.The content of ESSA and PA Chapter 339
will be summarized along with their application in advocacy efforts.
- Cooperative and Collaborative Activities – Cooperation and collaboration are two important skills that are valued in today’s society and workplace.
Participants will learn a variety of cooperative activities that can be used with their students. The
difference between cooperation and collaboration will be explained and illustrated.
- Dice for Fun and Fitness – Discover ways to use dice in games and activities that promote fitness, spatial awareness, math and reading skills.
- Dominoes for Fun and Fitness – Discover ways to use dominoes in games and activities that promote fitness, math and reading skills.
- Instant Actions – Explore ways for students to take responsibility for being active and engaged immediately upon entering the gymnasium.
- Leadership - Leadership qualities are explored and illustrated through anecdotes, pictures, quotes and activities.
- Locomotor Activities - Locomotor skills are the foundation of human movement. This segment stresses the importance of mastering locomotor skills
and ways to improve them through appropriate practice.
- Movement to Music – Participants will examine how movement to music develops cardiovascular fitness, coordination and fluidity of movement.
- Polyspots – Participants will learn games, activities and ideas using various kinds of polyspots (spot markers).
- Problem Based Learning – Problem solving and decision making are two important skills needed throughout life and in the workplace. Participants
will take part in activities that demonstrate how groups work together to solve problems while allowing each person to
identify their personal role in the process.
- RPS Formats – Using variations of Rock, Paper, Scissors, participants will learn formats and configurations that can be used with many activities in a
variety of ways.
- Station Rotations – Participants will learn the purpose and advantages of using stations and create a list of ideas and activities that can be used when
designing stations.
- The Newly Proposed PA Academic Standards and Outcomes – Get a head start by learning about the proposed PA Standards and Outcomes
(slated for release in late 2019) and the resources that will accompany them. This
is a particularly helpful segment for those who are currently writing or plan to write
curriculum in the very near future.
