"Everyone in our profession is an
advocate. It is not a choice. The
choice is how well you choose
to advocate."

SHAPE America Issues and Advocacy

Goal 1: Reinstate the Health and Physical Education Advisor Position at the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Status: PDE has reinstated the position and Nick Slotterback became the full-time HPE Advisor on January 3, 2022.

Goal 2: Approval of the proposed Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Health and Physical Education.

Status: The Standard Statements and Outcomes are available on the SAS Portal under "Content Repository." They may be used as a resource in writing curriculum. Waiting the Pennsylvania Board of Education's approval.

Goal 3: Pennsylvania Department of Education's enforcement of "waivers" or "substitutes" for Physical Education nor the permitting of programs often referred to as "alternative" Physical Education.

Status: Discussions have taken place with the new HPE Advisor and higher level administrators at PDE. The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) has continued to support our position against waivers for Physical Education for participation in interscholastic sports.
